On February 11, 2025, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Type One Energy entered into a Cooperative Agreement to explore the potential for a fusion power plant project in the TVA region. The plant would be a 350 MWe project providing base load electricity generation as early as the mid 2030s. The partnership is considering repurposing retired fossil fuel plant infrastructure. The Cooperative Agreement expands on Project Infinity, first launched by Type One Energy, TVA, and the U.S. DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in early 2024, with support from the state of Tennessee. Type One has already committed to building their first prototype at a retired TVA coal plant with support from Tennessee’s Nuclear Energy Fund. For more information, see the press release here.
